As exclusively revealed in 874 of this week's edition of Soccer Laduma, former Orlando Pirates striker, Siphelele Mthembu, is in talks to sign a deal to join Kaizer Chiefs in the 2014/15 season.
The powerful forward and his representatives are currently locked in talks with Chiefs, as both parties look to potentially conclude a deal.
The Siya crew have already reported on the striker's links with the Glamour Boys earlier in his career. Mthembu reportedly signed a deal to go to Chiefs in 2008, however his representatives were already said to have a struck deal for him join Orlando Pirates instead.
He later featured in a Vodacom Challenge match for the Amakhosi against Manchester United, before Bucs later won a legal argument and he eventually went on to spend three unproductive years with that club.
Relatively average spells followed later with Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows, before he enjoyed a very good 2013/14 campaign with Platinum Stars.
It appears to be on the strength of his time with Dinaledi that Chiefs have entered into talks with the Melmoth-born star. We examined our exclusive Soccer Laduma stats, powered by Prozone, to see what Stuart Baxter's men will get if they secure Mthembu's services.
The big striker's imposing frame shows he has the ability to hold up the ball, bring others into play and create chances as well. Last season he provided the second most assists in the PSL with six goals created.
This means he could potentially play a similar role to Kingston Nkhatha, although the forward is less likely to make as many runs behind the opposition's defence as the Zimbabwean does. However, his effectiveness at bringing others into play could still be an asset for the Naturena-based outfit.
Mthembu's nine goals in all competitions for Stars in one season represents the forward's best return during his professional playing career as well. This indicates he is reaching his top form as a hitman in front of goal. The player averaged an impressive 44% shooting accuracy when it comes to hitting the target in '13/14.
What our numbers suggest is that 'Shaka Zulu' is a striker who is in the best form of his career and that if Chiefs were to land their man, the club would potentially have a very dangerous weapon ahead of the '14/15 campaign.
The Siya crew will keep a close eye on how talks progress between Mthembu and Chiefs. Watch this space!
