Maritzburg United goalkeeper, Shu-Aib Walters, has expressed his shock at the news of Steve Komphela's departure to Chippa United.
Soccer Laduma broke the news earlier today (Tuesday, May 13) that Komphela had signed a deal to join the Chilli Boys.
There had been much speculation in the media about the coach's immediate future, although there were plenty of denials he was going to leave the Team of Choice.
The 46-year-old had an inspired time in charge of Maritzburg, guiding the club to safety with room to spare, and also reached the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.
Nonetheless, with Komphela's move to Chippa now confirmed, experienced shot-stopper, Walters, has expressed his feelings about the move.
He told the Siya crew, "I'm actually quite shocked because that's the first time I've heard about it. It's a bit of a shock because I really thought we really had something good going."
"I was looking forward to a good pre-season to see what the build-up to our season would be. But, at the end of the day, in football a person has to do what's best for them and their career, "Walters said.
The 32-year-old also wished his former coach all the best on his new project, "What I can do is to wish Steve all the best in his future endeavours. I hope he can do at Chippa what he did with us at Maritzburg, you know."
"It will be a big loss, and is tough because there's not many top coaches out there. I feel for the club as well, hey. Look, I think everyone read on the Soccer Laduma website about him possibly leaving. Nowadays we come to the conclusion that when there's smoke then there's fire. Again though, I want to wish Steve all the best!"
