Why Kaizer Chiefs Needed Jali More Than Sundowns…

Andile Jali has chosen Mamelodi Sundowns over Kaizer Chiefs, but it would appear that one club needed him more than the other.

The 28-year-old former Orlando Pirates midfielder is on his way back to the Absa Premiership after a spell in Belgium with KV Oostende and had two of South Africa’s biggest clubs falling over themselves to try and get him on board, although ultimately decided on Masandawana.
In this week’s issue of Soccer Laduma, the central midfield situation at both Chiefs and Sundowns was put under the microscope, taking a closer look at the six players most utilised by the clubs last season.
What became apparent through the statistics is that, with just Willard Katsande, George Maluleka and Wiseman Meyiwa on their books, the Amakhosi were more in need of a Jali-like player than a Masandawana side boasting Hlompho Kekana, Tiyani Mabunda and Oupa Manyisa.
While Katsande enjoys excellent stats when it comes to the defensive aspects of his game, his age and inability to drive forward seem to make him less rounded than the Sundowns trio.
With that in mind, if Jali was looking to play more regular football then a move to Chiefs could have been his better option, with a transfer to Chloorkop now leaving him to battle it out with three of the top midfielders in the league for a spot in Pitso Mosimane’s XI.
