Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba briefed members of the media during his squad announcement at the South African Football Association headquarters in Nasrec, Johannesburg that the Bafana Captain’s armband will rotate among identified players, instead of it resting on a single player.
After announcing his 26 man squad which will play Congo Brazzaville in the 2015 CAF AFCON qualifiers both away and at home on the 11 October and 15 October respectively, the South African mentor declared that the captain’s armband will not be worn by just one player, but will be worn by deserving players who are capable of leading the team.
“We are trying to build complete players. We are consistently monitoring our players closely and identifying players who can lead, if we are going to rely on one player to be the Captain than that will give us problems. I have mentioned the criteria we use when we select the Captain,” said Mashaba.
Even when questioned if this policy will remain in effect upon the return of Itumeleng Khune, the South African mentor confidently declared yes.
“Yes even when Khune is back we will still rotate the armband,” expressed Mashaba.
Bafana Bafana will travel to the Pointe Noire Stadium in Congo on 11 October and return to South Africa on the 12th to take on Congo at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on the 15th of October. The match will begin at 20h05.
