According to a Siya crew source, there is an agreement in place between Bafana Bafana and Ajax Amsterdam that midfielder Thulani Serero won’t be pushed too hard during this month’s African Cup of Nations.
The 22-year-old only recently recovered from a groin injury that ruled him out for a number of months, and for a long time, it was thought that he wouldn’t make Gordon Igesund’s final Afcon squad.
However, Serero got himself back in training sooner than many expected and earned himself a call up to the Afcon, although it is thought that he’s still a long way from being fully fit.
The former Ajax Cape Town man was introduced as a second-half substitute in Bafana’s 0-0 draw with Cape Verde and the national team coach has already explained that he’s not ready to play a full 90 minutes yet.
Sources have told the crew that, during a conversation between the Bafana technical team and the Ajax one, an agreement was made that Serero wouldn’t be overworked in order to make sure that he recovers properly from his recent injury.
Despite the agreement, it remains to be seen whether, should Bafana need him, Serero will be tempted to push himself in order to help his country make it out of the group stage.
