Serero: I Was Not Faking Injury

Thulani Serero has told the Siya crew that he did not fake injury to get out of Bafana Bafana duty, and that he wants to play for Bafana.

South Africa’s football fans were rocked on Friday night when it was announced that the talented 23-year-old had been kicked out of Gordon Igesund’s camp, with ‘ill-discipline’ the reasons cited for his dismissal.

At the time it was explained that Igesund would not be discussing the issue until after the crucial World Cup qualifier against Botswana, although the Siya crew revealed that it was believed to be because Serero was insisting that he was injured.

Following the game, which Bafana went on to win 4-1, the national team’s head coach went into detail regarding what happened with the Ajax Amsterdam midfielder, stating that he had ‘turned his back on Bafana’ and chosen his club over his country.

However, speaking to the crew briefly before boarding his flight back to Amsterdam, Serero remains adamant that he was genuinely injured and that’s why he was wary about taking part.

The talented midfield man said, “I was not faking injury. My family was in Durban to watch the game, why would I fake an injury? If I was going to fake an injury why would I stay so long in the camp?”

There have been rumours circulating that, following the events, Serero would follow in the footsteps of Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar by retiring from international football.

However, when asked if he still wanted to play for the national team he replied, Yeah, of course I want to play for Bafana and for the coach also, I want people to know that I want to play for the country.”

Ajax now have a busy month ahead of them, with Kamohelo Mokotjo’s PEC Zwolle travelling to Amsterdam ArenA on the 14th,  before two huge away games, firstly against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League and secondly against PSV Eindhoven.
