With an injury crisis currently gripping the first team squad, Maritzburg United may be relieved that Ghanaian winger Frank Sarfo-Gyamfi is still with the Team of Choice.
The talented 19-year-old was expected to join Ghana Premier League club Asante Kotoko on a one-year loan deal in September.
However, the deal fell through after the player was unable to sign before the close of the August transfer window.
Sarfo-Gyamfi made just two league starts for Maritzburg last season and the club were hopeful he’d get some regular game time by going on loan to Kotoko.
The teenager was signed by the Team of Choice before the start of the 2012/13 season, after impressing for the Ghana U20 national team. Nevertheless, Sarfo-Gyamfi’s presence in the United squad appears to give coach Ernst Middendorp some options given the club’s injury crisis.
United’s Commercial Manager, Younus Kadodia, confirmed that the player is an option the club could call upon.
He said, “Ja, there was an issue with the window period in Ghana. It closed four days earlier and he wasn’t able to be registered. The deal never happened and he came back. Obviously now he’s an option for us here at the club because of all the injuries.”
