Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Sangweni picked up an Achilles tendon injury in Bucs’ 3-1 victory over Mpumalanga Black Aces in last night’s Telkom Knockout clash.
Sangweni had only recently returned to the Bucs line-up after sustaining a knee injury which saw him sidelined for roughly three months.
The defender made his way back into Bucs’ starting line-up after getting through a number of friendlies while the rest of his teammates were on CAF Champions League duty.
Pirates’ Public Relations Officer, Mickey Modisane, informed the Siya crew that Sangweni’s Achilles tendon injury is a serious concern for the club, although the tough tackling centre back will only learn the full extent of the injury later today.
Modisane told Soccer-Laduma, “The injury that Siya sustained is an Achilles tendon. It’s difficult to say how long it will leave him on the sidelines. We’ll know later today how long he’ll be out for, after a thorough assessment.”
Sangweni’s injury will throw another spanner in the works for the side, with the issues surrounding Bucs captain Lucky Lekgwathi, who missed the team’s 3-1 Telkom Knockout victory over Aces.
