SAFPU Lashes Out At Clubs: That’s Against The Law

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has lashed out at PSL clubs for cutting the salaries of some players.

Since the decision by the PSL to suspend the both the Absa Premiership and GladAfrica Championship in March, there have been incidents of clubs confirming cutting the players’ salaries.

AmaZulu and Cape Town City are among the clubs known to have gone that route, and speaking to the Siya crew, SAFPU president Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe lashed out at clubs for doing so.

“There have been a few naughty incidences where clubs have taken a unilateral decision to cut the players’ salaries. We don’t approve that and we don’t want that. This is very wrong and it cannot happen. That’s against the law. We have raised these issues with those particular clubs. We have no doubt that those clubs have transgressed the rules,” said Gaoshubelwe.

“We rely on the act and the act says in terms of the basic condition employment act, section 34 of it, it talks about the deduction of salaries from the employee that the employer may not deduct the employee’s salary without the employee’s consent. But they are just naughty doing it and we caution against that. That’s very wrong. They should not even be tempted to do that because they still get their full grants,” he added.
