Should Igesund Decide His Own Fate?

Following SAFA’s National Executive Meeting which was held this past weekend at SAFA’s headquarters in Nasrec, Johannesburg, Bafana Bafana head coach, Gordon Igesund, will know his immediate destiny at 4pm today. 

Igesund, who took over as Bafana coach on 30 June 2012, has been the subject of rife speculation regarding his future at the helm of the men’s national football team, and will meet with SAFA today to be briefed about the outcomes of Saturday’s NEC meeting. 

With his contract coming to an end on August 31, and the FA uncertain if they will extend his stay beyond that, the 57-year-old will have some major decisions to make regarding his future in the Bafana set-up. 

Former Bafana boss and Portuguese mentor, Carlos Queiroz, is the FA’s first choice candidate, according to Siya crew sources, however no deal has been finalised yet. Queiroz’s appointment will be influenced by various factors, including his salary demands, which may be too rich for SAFA’s liking, as well as implementing his own technical master plan.

Nigeria’s mentor, Stephen Keshi, has also been thrown into the mix as a possible candidate, with sources within SAFA having confirmed that the FA have spoken to the former Nigerian international.

This scenario places coach Igesund in a predicament, because whilst SAFA may intend to retain the record-breaking four time PSL-winning coach, who has been linked to Moroka Swallows and SuperSport United, it may only be on a short-term basis. 

If it’s a case of simply seeing out his contract, it will cost him valuable preseason time with any club he may sign for.
