Maritzburg Star: We Didn’t Want To Be There Another Week!
Maritzburg United’s young defender, Rushine De Reuck, says that the club was adamant not to stay at the bottom of the Absa Premiership, something that spurred them on to victory.
The Team of Choice managed to keep two clean sheets in a row going into the weekend’s clash with Bloemfontein Celtic, however, were still awaiting their first win of the season after a tough start to 2018/19 for Fadlu Davids’ side.
Now though, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Siwelele, the club has climbed up to 13th place, and have managed to get a weight off their shoulders by bagging those first three points of the campaign.
Speaking to the Siya crew, De Reuck, who has played every game so far, who explained what helped them get the proverbial monkey off their back.
The 22-year-old said, “It’s not only the back four that’s defending… It starts from the front. We try and cover all the right spaces so teams can’t hurt us, and we allow certain things that we know we can control. We know if we don’t concede, we can’t lose, so we pride ourselves in keeping clean sheets.
“Going into the last game we knew that there was a lot at stake. We didn’t want to see ourselves sitting at the bottom for another week. Obviously, I personally don’t think we deserve to be where we are, but what can we do? We need to show our quality on the field.
“Celtic have improved a lot since the last time we played them in the Nedbank Cup, and it wasn’t easy for us to keep them out, but we did and I’m so proud of everyone. It’s a big weight off our shoulders, hopefully, we can achieve something special this season.”
Maritzburg’s next game sees them face AmaZulu on October 2nd as they look to try and move into the Absa Premiership’s top eight.
