Eagles' Big Splash!
Royal Eagles' opening National First Division match on Friday evening, August 22, against Baroka FC, has been switched to the Moses Mabhida Stadium, where a huge crowd is expected to cheer KZN’s newest professional team.
This much-anticipated game was originally scheduled for King Zwelithini Stadium, but damage to this facility during an event on Women’s Day, means Eagles have a fantastic opportunity of making history.
“This is the first time that Moses Mabhida will host an NFD match,” Eagles GM Richard Makhoba told Soccer Laduma. “It’ll be a very big occasion, with dignitaries such as KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu and eThekwini mayor, James Nxumalo both attending in order to welcome us in the province.
“Our chairman, Sbu Mpisane and his wife, Shawn, have decided to make available 100 buses to transport fans from around the city’s universities, while musicians Mafikizolo, Uhuru and DJ Oskido, have agreed to perform for free. All this just shows we’ve set a trend, so you can understand the direction which we’re intending to take. After our recent road show, people responded positively in numbers.”
Besides the huge festive atmosphere, Makhoba is confident that on the pitch his young side will deliver given the experience of their technical team.
“No disrespect to AmaZulu, Lamontville Golden Arrows or Thanda Royal Zulu, but I’m hoping this team will revive the spirit of football in the province. Come Saturday morning, I think we’ll all be happy,” he concludes.
The match will commence at 19:30.
