Referee Admits To Making An Error, Red Card Rescinded
Referee Acknowledges Error Of Mistaken Identity
Referee Thando Ndzandzeka has acknowledged his mistake from the weekend’s match for Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates.
In what was the match’s controversial moment, Ndzandzeka issued a red card to Limbikani Mzava, instead of showing a yellow card to Mzwandile Buthelezi, who was guilty of fouling Pirates’ Luvuyo Memela.
The South African Football Association has confirmed that the red card has been rescinded after the match official acknowledged his mistake.
Pirates beat Arrows 2-1 and closed the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the PSL log to only one point.
“In the match between Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates over this past weekend, referee Mr Thando Ndzandzeka showed the red card to the wrong player. Mr Ndzandzeka wrongly showed the red card for two yellow cards to Arrows player Lambikano Mzava (shirt number 5). The Golden Arrows player who was supposed to have been shown the yellow card for a reckless challenge is Mzwandile Buthelezi (shirt number 3),” SAFA confirmed on their official website.
“Therefore, the red card shown to Mzava is rescinded on the basis of mistaken identity. The referee has since written an acknowledgement letter that after reviewing the match, he had shown the yellow card to the wrong player,” confirmed SAFA.
“We have since written correspondence to this effect to the club and the Premier Soccer League,” said Tenda Masikhwa from SAFA Referees Department.
