Dikwena End Chiefs Unbeaten Run

Absa Premiership

Result: Platinum Stars 2-0 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 12 March 2014

Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium

Platinum Stars beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 on Wednesday night in an Absa Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, their first win in four games.

Siphelele Mthembu and Robert Ng'ambi scored the goals.

The loss was Chiefs’ first defeat since November 2013, and only the second time they have lost away to Platinum Stars in the league.

Chiefs remain top of the table with 43 points, six ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits, with Wits having a game in hand, while Dikwena move into sixth place on 31 points.

In the fifth minute Reyaad Pieterse had to be alert as Vuyo Mere’s cross drifted goal-wards, but the keeper made a flamboyant save to stop the ball.

In the ninth minute Platinum Stars took the lead when Mthembu was played in beautifully by Robert  Ng’ambi, and Mthembu rounded Pieterse and put the ball in the back of the net.

In the 11th minute Tefu Mashamaite rose well at to reach Siphiwe Tshabalala’s corner kick, but his headed effort went over the goal.

In the 16th minute Katlego Mphela made a good run into the box to reach an over-the-top pass, but he was unable to control the ball when one-on-one with Siyabonga Mpontshane.

In the 19th minute Mere tried a long range attempt, but the ball went safely into Pieterse’s hands.

Chiefs went close in the 21st minute from a set piece, but after a goalmouth scramble, Benson Mhlongo was able to clear before Willard Katsande could reach it.

Mthembu had another chance for Dikwena on the half hour mark, but his attempt from just outside the box went wide to the left.

In the 32nd minute Tshabalala shot wide of goal, and a minute later Mphela set him up again, but this time Mpontshane made a great diving save to deny the Chiefs’ captain on-the-day.

In the 36th minute Mphela did well to reach to a free kick sent in by Tshabalala, but his headed attempt ballooned over the goal.

Thabiso Semenya had a chance on the other end two minutes later to double Dikwena’s lead, but Pieterse made a good save to touch the ball over the goal.

Pieterse was back in the action in the 40th minute making a great save to deny a powerful long range effort from Lindokuhle Mbatha.

Mashamaite thought he had equalised in the 44th minute when he got onto a flicked ball by Mphela from a Tshabalala corner, but Mashamaite’s shot hit the woodwork and bounced back into play.

Dikwena started the second half brightly and Mthembu had a chance in the opening minute, but he couldn’t quite get a full head on the ball, and it flew across the face of the goal and wide.

In the 51st minute Tshabalala had another chance at goal, but his effort from outside the box went just wide, and four minutes later he shot over from a free kick.

Morgan Gould had a chance from another Chiefs’ set piece in the 58th minute, but his header went straight into the hands of Mpontshane.

But a minute later it was 2-0 to Platinum Stars as Mbatha sent in a great cross from the right and Robert Ng’ambi got onto the end of it to score his sixth PSL goal of the season.

In the 66th minute Mere had another chance for Dikwena, but his long range attempt took a deflection and went wide.

Substitute Knowledge Musona had a chance to pull one back in the 73rd minute, but Siboniso Gaxa’s square ball was slightly behind Musona, and he pulled his shot over the goal.

Three minutes later Musona looked to dance his way through the Dikwena defence, but Solomon Mathe put in an inch-perfect tackle just before the Zimbabwean striker could shoot.

Chiefs continued to press for goals but a resolute Stars defence continued to deny them.

In the referee's optional time another substitute, Matthew Rusike, was denied by a good Mpontshane save, as was Tshabalala seconds later.

Just before the final whistle Musona went close, but his final touch as he tried to beat Mpontshane, sent the ball wide of goal.
