Katsande Hands Chiefs Win

Absa Premiership

Full Time: Orlando Pirates 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 15 March 2014

Venue: FNB Stadium

Willard Katsande’s first goal for Kaizer Chiefs in 67 matches handed the Amakhosi a 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers started the better of the two sides and created their first chance on goal in the fourth minute when Oupa Manyisa broke down the right and supplied a pin-point cross for Mpho Makola, but he saw his six-yard header superbly saved by Riyaad Pieterse.

Chiefs created their first chance from a set-piece four minutes later when a Bernard Parker free-kick into the box was met by Tefu Mashamaite, but he saw his close range header blocked by Senzo Meyiwa.

In the 12th minute Manyisa set Ayanda Gcaba through on goal with a great pass, but he saw his powerful shot from an acute angle on the left acrobatically saved by Pieterse.

A minute later Makola tried his luck from the edge of the box, but the Pirates man saw his thunderbolt of a shot skim the wrong side of the left-hand post.

The next decent effort on goal only came in the 26th minute after Kingston Nkhatha met a right-wing cross from Siphiwe Tshabalala, but his ten-yard header went wide of the goal.

Ten minutes later Gcaba worked himself into some space on the left side of the Chiefs box, but again he shot narrowly wide of the target.

Chiefs finished the half the stronger of the two sides and Parker was unlucky not to give his side the lead in the 41st minute when a poor clearance from Lucky Lekgwathi saw the ball fall to him 16-yards out, but he fired over the crossbar.

The half ended 0-0.

Chiefs started the second 45 very positively and a superb passing movement saw them with a sight on goal in the 51st minute, but Reneilwe Letsholonyane shot centimetres over from 16-yards out.

Two minutes later and Parker tried his luck from 30-yards out, but Meyiwa made a good save to deny him.

In the 58th minute Willard Katsande met a free-kick into the box from Parker, but his header sailed narrowly over the target from 12-yards out.

Three minutes later the Amakhosi made their pressure tell as Katsande headed home a Tshabalala corner-kick from close range to give his side the lead, 1-0.

Pirates tried to find their way back into the match after that, but were unable to breach the Chiefs defence as the Amakhosi held on for the win.
