Sthembiso Ngcobo’s solitary goal gave Wits a narrow 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
Arrows started the game off stronger of the two and had the first shot at goal in the 6th minute through Christopher Katongo but his effort was blocked by Mathew Booth resulting in a corner.
Nkanyiso Mngwengwe then got his head on the end of Philani Shange's corner but the defender’s header went well wide of the target.
Third placed Wits then broke the deadlock at the King Zwelithini Stadium in the 12th minute as Sthembiso Ngcobo broke the offside trap and smashed a left footed volley past a helpless Arthur Bartman, to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
Arrows midfielder Jabulani Nene tried to pull one back for the hosts but his shot was well saved by Moeneeb Josephs in the Wits goal with 16 minutes played and the goalkeeper was at hand to deny Nene again five minutes later.
The home side continued to press forward in search of an equaliser but they could not find a way past the impressive Josephs in the guest’s goal.
The Wits keeper was then on hand to thwart Arrows striker Rudolph Bester as the first-half came to an end.
Arrows striker Katonga came close to dragging his side level on the hour mark but his shot was not good enough to beat Josephs.
Ngcobo the almost added to his tally in the 68th minute but the striker’s effort was parried away to safety by Bartman in the Arrows goal.
Bottom of the table Arrows have now lost their previous five matches while the result leaves Wits still in the title hunt.
