Baroka Edge Closer To Maintaining Top Flight Status

PSL Promotion/Relegation Play-Off

Result: Baroka 2-0 Stellenbosch

Date: 10 June 2017

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Baroka FC edged closer to securing their Absa Premiership status for another season, after they defeated Stellenbosch 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

In what was a must win match for Stellenbosch and a match where Baroka simply had to avoid defeat to stay, the home side showed no intent of playing for a draw as they took the lead in just the second minute of the game.

A well-worked free-kick found Dineo Shaku in the Stellenbosch box and the defender headed home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The game lacked any real excitement after that as neither team managed to break the opposition defence.

Stellenbosch suffered a blow when Sbusiso Hadebe was forced off the field through injury and was replaced by Brent Adonis in the 42nd minute.

1- 0 was how the first half ended as Bakgaga took their slender lead into the break.

The second half failed to bring about any excitement and was for the most part a matter of both teams cancelling out each other’s attacks.

Baroka did however manage to create what was a clear cut opportunity late in the game when a cross into the box was met by Bakgaga forward who saw his header hit the woodwork.

Not long after, Kgoloko Thobejane’s men all but sealed the game with a well-placed finish by midfielder Mduduzi Mdatsane to extend his side’s lead with six minutes to go.

2-0 is how it ended in Polokwane with Baroka edging a step closer to retaining their PSL status with a vital three points in front of their home crowd.

Barok moved three points clear of Stellenbosch, who occupy second spot with two points, while Black Leopards remain third with one point.

Here's how they lined up:

Baroka: Masuluke, Mahashe, Kgoetyane, Shaku, Madatsane, Madubanya, Moeti, Masenamela, Letsoalo, Matloga, Kgaswane.

Stellenbosch:  Arubi, Lecki, Booysen, Sait, Hadebe, Rowell, Moroole, Mekoa, Mabua, Muishond, Niang.
