Absa Premiership

Result: SuperSport United 1-3 Maritzburg United

Date: 2 April 2014

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Maritzburg United surprised home side SuperSport United with a 3-1 win at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night, with goals from Heinrich Isaacks, David Booysen and Terrence Mandaza cancelling out Bradley Grobler’s early strike.

The win moves Steve Komphela’s side onto 27 points, and while they remain in 13th spot, they are now just one point behind Ajax Cape Town and Tuks, but more importantly the gap between them and 14th placed Free State Stars is now six points.

SuperSport drop to eighth position, being overtaken by Mpumalang Black Aces, who beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 at the same time to move up to fifth.

Bradley Grobler got SuperSport into the lead in the seventh minute, when he got onto the end of a good ball from Jabu Mahlangu and hit a right-footed shot past Virgil Vries in the Maritzburg goal. 1-0.

Enocent Mkhabela almost made it 2-0 in the 15th minute, but this time Vries did well to get a touch and deflected it out for a corner.

In the 22nd minute Nambian Heinrich Isaacks found the equaliser for the visitors, after some good work from Orlando Smeekes and Kurt Lentjies in the build-up, with Lentjies forcing a save out of Ronwen Williams before Isaacks slotted home. 1-1.

Three minutes and Maritzburg were in the lead, when David Booysen headed the ball in from a Lentjies corner. 1-2.

Grobler tried his luck in the 28th minute, but once again Vries was up to the task and made a good diving save to deny him.

Three minutes later Thato Mokeke tried a shot from range, but it went wide of goal.

SuperSport came out in the second half pushing for the equaliser and in the 50th minute Mkhabela’s shot went wide to the left.

In the 67th minute substitute Lebogang Manyama tried a shot but it went just wide of goal.

A minute later another replacement Mame Niang headed just over the goal.

With fifteen minutes to go Grobler tried a shot directly from a free kick, but Vries made the save.

But it wasn’t to be for Cavin Johnson’s team, Terrence Mandaza scored to make it 3-1 to the visitors in the 84th minute, and seal the three points.
