Segolela Goal Downs Birds

Absa Premiership

Full Time: Orlando Pirates 1-0 Moroka Swallows

Date: 29 March 2014

Venue: Orlando Stadium

A single goal 12 minutes into the game from Tlou Segolela saw Orlando Pirates beat Moroka Swallows 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

The opening 45 minutes was a half largely dominated by the Buccaneers as they controlled the possession stakes and dictated the flow of the game.

Pirates came close to opening the scoring in the ninth minute when Mpho Makola slipped Sifiso Myeni through on goal, but Greg Etafia was quickly off his goalline to make the stop.

Three minutes later, however, and Pirates did take the lead when Thabo Matlaba broke into the box from the left flank, but saw his initial shot brilliantly saved by Etafia.

Sadly for Swallows, though, the keeper palmed the ball straight into the path of Tlou Segolela who headed the rebound home form a couple of yards out, 1-0.

The Birds only had their first effort on goal in the 21st minute when Siyabonga Nomvethe beat one defender before seeing his 16-yard shot blocked by Lucky Legwathi.

Three minutes later Thandani Ntshumayelo tried his luck from long range, but the Pirates man saw his shot go just wide.

Swallows best chance of the opening stanza fell on the half hour mark when Rudi Isaacs met a corner-kick, but his header skimmed the wrong side of the crossbar.

The last decent chance of the half was a 30-yard free-kick from Lerato Chabangu which sailed over Senzo Meyiwa’s crossbar.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of Pirates.

The second half started at a lively pace with Felix Obada beating one defender before firing inches wide from the edge of the box in the 49th minute.

Two minutes later Matlaba tried his luck at the other end with similar skills, but his shot also narrowly missed the target.

In the 55th minute Myeni worked his way into the Swallows box from the right, but his low shot from 16-yards was well-saved by Etafia.

Swallows controlled possession after that, but produced very little in the final third in terms goal mouth chances.

Instead, the Birds continued to waste possession in the final third with poor passing and woeful crossing as the game ended 1-0 in favour of Pirates.
