Absa Premiership
Result: Maritzburg United 1-0 Golden Arrows
Date: 6 April 2014
Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium
Orlando Smeekes' well taken volley was enough to earn Maritzburg United a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in a Absa Premiership encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The win moved Steve Komphela's side up to 12th on the Absa Premiership log, while Arrows' seventh successive loss sees them remian rooted the foot of the table.
Orlando Smeeks opened the scoring for Maritzburg with their first real opening in the 17th minute with a stunning volley for his third strike of the season.
Ruben Cloete squandered an opportunity to double the home side's lead in the 29th minute as the full back blasted horribly wide from inside the area after being teed up by Smeekes.
Arrows recorded their first effort on target in the 37th minute as Thembela Sokhakhane cut in from left before firing a low-driven effrort straight at Shu-Aib Walters.
Manti Moholo was next to have a go from distance just before the halftime break, but the Arrows' midfielder fired his effort wide of the mark.
Mario Booysen nearly increased the home side's advantage eight minutes after the restart, as the defender headed over from close range.
Bongi Ntuli should have leveled matters three minutes later, the striker showed some good skill to beat his man before firing a tame effort at Walters.
Terrence Mandaza almost increased the Team of Choice's lead in the 77th minute but the striker's effort lack power to beat Arthur Bartman from close range.
Bartman came to Arrows' rescue in the 80th minute to brilliantly deny Ashley Hartog from close range.
Arrows hardly troubled Walters throughout the 90 minutes, as Arrows look dead and buried at the bottom of the log.
