The Premier Soccer League has issued a statement to member clubs about the chaotic promotion/relegation play-offs, as the football fraternity awaits to see if the match between Royal AM and Chippa United will eventually take place.
Following their 2-1 over Richards Bay FC on Saturday, the Chilli Boys have travelled to KwaZulu-Natal for their second scheduled match against Royal AM at Chatsworth Stadium.
On Monday afternoon, Royal AM boss Shauwn Mkhize confirmed that her side will not honour the fixture, this after the KZN club's application for leave to appeal was dismissed which paved way for the play-offs to finally get underway on the weekend.
In their statement sent to member clubs on Tuesday morning, which has been seen by the Siya crew, the PSL confirms that ‘nothing prevented the commencement of the 2020/21 GladAfrica promotion/relegation playoffs’ after Judge Roland Sutherland had dismissed Royal AM’s application for leave to appeal.
According to the NSL rules:
15.2. Where a match is not played because of the late or non-arrival of a Member Club team, or of both teams, the offending Member Club or Member Clubs will be charged with misconduct. In this regard impossibility of performance as a result of a vehicle breakdown, logistical problem, or that the Member Club team was unable to locate the match venue, will not be a defence to this charge.
15.3. Where a Member Club is found guilty in terms of Rule 15.2 its opponent in that match will receive a "walk-over" (a 3-0 win), unless the Disciplinary Committee considers that a different sanction may be more appropriate.
As things stand, Chippa is likely to be awarded three goals and three points after Royal AM failed to honour the match.
15:00 The referee blows his whistle, followed by a second whistle to mark the conclusion of the match. A forfeit is recorded and the matter will go to a disciplinary hearing.
14:59 Royal AM was a no-show for the scheduled fixture and the match officials go through the necessary protocols.
14:58 Chippa and match officials observe a moment of silence.
14:56 Chippa United come onto the field of play.
14:48 An insider reveals that Royal AM are of the opinion that they would be at a disadvantage by competing against Chippa United.
14:42 Sources indicate that Royal AM were unhappy with something related to the dressing room and packed up, exiting the venue without any communication.
14:28 Chippa United post a video of the players warming up ahead of the match, by themselves on the pitch.
14:26 Insiders at the club have confirmed that Royal AM have left the stadium.
14:22 A source suggests to the Siya crew that the match might not go ahead as planned.
13:56 Sources have also indicated that the club’s official vehicles and the team bus have arrived at the Chatsworth Stadium.
13:38 According to Siya sources in KZN, Mkhize might have changed her stance on the fixture abandonment and that the game might go ahead as planned.
Statement by the PSL:
TO: MEMBER CLUBS
DATE: 22 JUNE 2021
SUBJECT: PROMOTION/RELEGATION PLAY-OFFS
Dear Member Clubs,
On 19 June 2021 the PSL confirmed that in light of Judge Roland Sutherland dismissing Royal AM Football Club's application for leave to appeal on 18 June 2021 nothing prevented the commencement of the 2020/21 GladAfrica promotion / relegation playoffs.
The PSL was advised that the order of Nyathi AJ of 14 June 2021 suspending the commencement of the playoffs "pending the final determination of Royal AM's application for leave to appeal and/or appeal" no longer applied. Nyathi AJ today handed down reasons for his order of 14 June 2021 and expressly confirmed that he handed down the order he did “pending the application before his Lordship Sutherland DJP.” There is no room for debate on the matter.
The playoffs have commenced, and the second match of the competition will be played this afternoon at 15h00 at the Chatsworth Stadium between Royal AM and Chippa United Football Clubs.
The clash is scheduled to get underway at 15:00.
