Full Time: Polokwane City 1-0 Orlando Pirates
Date: 15 February 2014
Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium
A single goal from Sipho Jembula handed Polokwane City a shock 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The opening 45 minutes saw Pirates with more of the ball, but they failed to make their possession count as they wasted opportunity after opportunity in front of goal.
The Buccaneers created their first chance on goal in the sixth minute when Lucky Lekgwathi headed a corner-kick narrowly over the crossbar from ten-yards out.
In the 12th minute Kermit Erasmus tried his luck form 30-yards out, but the Pirates man saw his effort sail wide of the target.
The Bucs created their best chance four minutes later from a clever set-piece. Khethowakhe Masuku chipped the ball form the edge of the box to an unmarked Thabo Matlaba ten-yards out, but he fired over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
Erasmus wasted another opportunity in the 18th minute when a goalmouth scramble inside the Polokwane box fell to him, but he shot wide from 12-yards out.
Ten minutes later and Pirates were made to pay for their missed opportunities when Polokwane took the lead.
A lapse in concentration in the Pirates defence saw Matlaba miss-communicate with goalkeeper Fatau Dauda which in turn allowed Sipho Jembula to sneak in-between them and poke the ball home, 1-0.
After going behind Pirates pressed forward in defence and left themselves vulnerable to the counter-attack, and the home team almost capitalised on that fact in the 37th minute.
A quick counter-attack saw Prince Mahlakoane in space on the right side of the goal six-yards out, but his powerful shot from an acute angle was brilliantly saved by the keeper.
The half ended 1-0 in favour of Polokwane.
The second half saw Pirates dominating the possession stakes yet again, but similar to the first half their decision making in the final third was poor.
Instead, the first real chance of the half came at the other end of the park when a swift counter-attack saw Puleng Tlolane through on goal and with just the keeper to beat, but his chipped effort over the onrushing Dauda went inches wide.
Pirates’ first real effort of the half came in the 73rd minute when Kermit Erasmus saw his thunderbolt of a shot from just outside the box skim the wrong side of the upright.
The Buccaneers continued to push forward, but the Polokwane defence held firm as they picked up a shock 1-0 win over the Soweto Giants.
