Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane says that he is under stress to submit his final CAF Champions League squad list, as every time he tries to build a challenging squad, European teams take his players.
Europe-based Bongani Zungu and Keagan Dolly were both part of the team who won the Telkom Knockout trophy and Absa Premiership League title in the 2015/16 campaign, a feat Mosimane would have hoped to have repeated with the same squad in the following season.
However, Zungu was the first player of the league-winning team to leave Masandawana after European side, Vitoria Guimaraes swooped in with an offer.
Sundowns managed to fill the void left by Zungu at the time and subsequently went on to win the CAF Champions League title in 2016.
Following the team’s triumph on the African continent, it was not long after that Dolly was the next player to be snapped up by a European team, with his move then ending the Sundowns era of the most attacking trio in the PSL, the ‘CBD’.
Speaking after the game on Tuesday evening, Mosimane revealed that he is currently facing the headache of expensive price tags on some of his transfer targets, while also bearing in mind that once he builds another challenging squad, European teams might snap them up.
“It is a bit difficult, you know Sundowns, when they have to buy, the price is different. It is a bit costly but we play Champions League, we trading dollars there. So, it is a give and take. The worst part of it is, our players are being taken by Europe,” Mosimane told the media.
“Because we strengthen the squad for Africa and it looks good, once I have the team that is settled, you remember the team that got 71 points, won the Champions League, won the Telkom, the CBD Team, where is it? They take it, so as much as people think that Sundowns is taking from local clubs, the people with the Euro take my players. I am under stress every time to replace and also, they want to go play football in Europe, Bongani Zungu is gone and that is the team that got 71 points and won the league. So I am building another one, it is not easy,” he added.
