The ‘rivalry’ between Ernst Middendorp and Pitso Mosimane is no new thing in South African football; in fact, the two head coaches have been enjoying a war of words since 2006!
Mosimane and Middendorp have been ‘firing shots’ at each other during the entire 2019/20 season and the tension between the two head coaches continues to rise ahead of this weekend’s Absa Premiership meeting between the two sides.
While much has been said in the public this season, these two head coaches are no strangers to jibing each other; 13 years ago ahead of the 2006 SAA Super Eight Cup final, Middendorp had a taste of his counterpart’s cheeky ‘mind games’, with Mosimane having been the head coach of SuperSport United at the time.
In a press conference ahead of the 2006 final, Mosimane surprisingly uttered a similar sentiment to what he has been famous for this season – “we don’t need to beat Kaizer Chiefs to win the league.”
Here’s what Mosimane (head coach of SuperSport at the time) said in 2006 ahead of the Super Eight Cup final against Amakhosi:
“To me, playing in this final is not as important as winning the league. Reaching my sixth cup final in three seasons does not excite me and lifting the cup on Saturday will mean nothing to me,” Mosimane said on in October 2006, as quoted from Chiefs’ official website.
To which Middendorp responded: “If I have to play a cup final every weekend, I will be a happy man and will savour every cup final appearance. I think that Pitso is trying to lure us in a trap but we will not charge for his bait.”
Currently, 13 years later and nothing has changed. Despite Mosimane losing the cup final thereafter, he still maintains that a win against Ernst Middendorp’s side will not be a deciding factor in their success.
