Phakamani Mahlambi will be expected to score goals for Mamelodi Sundowns, according to the team’s head coach Pitso Mosimane.
The newly signed former Bidvest Wits player, who will be working on getting to the required fitness levels before being considered for selection to Mosimane’s matchday squads, will be carrying the hopes Downs as the team aims to boost its goalscoring form this season.
Speaking to the media after Downs’ loss against Cape Town City in the MTN8, Mosimane explained why it would be important for Mahlambi to follow in the footsteps of the likes of former stars Percy Tau and Khama Billiat.
“What Phaka has to do… he’s got speed… he has to get fit so as to give us that outlet. Here he will be expected to score more. Remember Percy (Tau) was a winger (but he was expected) to score goals. He would come as a (number) nine or a 10. Khama (Billiat) was a winger at Ajax (Cape Town), (was) converted as a 10,” said Mosimane.
Mosimane has also highlighted the importance of building the team, as some of the experienced players in his squad like captain Hlompho Kekana, Tiyani Mabunda and Wayne Arendse are not getting any younger.
