PSL & SAFA Set For Crunch Talks

A decision taken by world governing body FIFA could force the Premier Soccer League, in consultation with SAFA, to adjust their own calendar.

With FIFA not having made a special provision for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo later this year, it means clubs aren’t obliged to release players for the football tournament at the global showpiece!

That leaves coaches with potentially thin squads unless talks behind the scenes can guarantee that the club versus country row is avoided.

In SA, the Olympic team coach David Notoane has already announced a 40-man squad that will be trimmed down to 22 prior to the games in July, but it’s been confirmed he will have to rely on his bosses at SAFA to secure him the players.

“I think we will cross that bridge when we get there, but for us we can say we will engage the league at the right time to discuss the calendar,” Tebogo Motlanthe, the SAFA CEO, explained to the Siya crew on Tuesday.

“We’ve not received anything formal about the unavailability of players. But this will be a discussion with the PSL.”

The concern, however, is more around whether Notoane’s overseas contingent – the likes of Percy Tau, Kganya Leshabane, Gift Links, Lyle Foster and Luther Singh – will be released by their clubs when they are meant to report for pre-season.

Here at home, the PSL delayed the start of the domestic league by at least two weeks for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil to guarantee that then coach Owen da Gama had his strongest team and he was still able to pick some European based players as well.

FIFA have again confirmed that clubs aren’t obliged to release their stars, just like they did for the previous edition of the Games.

The Olympics are scheduled from July 22 to August 7 and Notoane will be hoping discussions between SAFA and the PSL begin soon.
