Eymael Confirms Phungwayo ‘Misunderstanding’ Amid Exit Talks
Patrick Phungwayo ‘Misunderstanding’ Confirmed At Free State Stars
Free State Stars head coach, Luc Eymael, has confirmed the ‘misunderstanding’ involving one of his top players at the Bethlehem club.
Patrick Phungwayo, who was a notable absentee from Ea Lla Koto’s matchday squad in their 3-0 loss against Maritzburg United this past weekend, is said to have been involved in an alleged altercation with the Belgian coach during one of the training sessions leading up to the match.
“There was a misunderstanding between Phungwayo and the coach, which led to the player considering leaving the club. It’s something that the club, coach and player are trying to resolve at the moment,” said the source.
However, Eymael has dismissed rumours that the former Orlando Pirates defender is leaving the club.
“Why are you saying he is leaving? No! He had a private issue and there was a misunderstanding,” Eymael told the Siya crew.
Phungwayo, 30, joined the Bethlehem outfit in September last year, after parting ways with Pirates.
In November, Eymael was quoted in the media as having said that he was surprised with the player’s inability to cross the ball properly.
“You can’t imagine how many times, until now, I correct Patrick Phungwayo in the matter of crossing. Can you imagine he went to Greece?
“His body is not well placed, his leg which is not touching the ball is not well placed – the small technical details are not there because players are not taught at the academy. That is why here, you have players who mature at 24 years,” the Belgian tactician was quoted at the time.
