A former Bafana Bafana coach has won a three-horse race to return to Mzansi’s topflight with a Gauteng-based club.
Following his departure from TS Galaxy in September where he was the head coach, Owen da Gama has been without a club in the last few months, and is now back in the thick of things after winning the race to join Sekhukhune United, as earlier reported by the Siya crew.
With five matches remaining in their 2021/22 DStv Premiership campaign and currently sitting in 10th place on the log with eight wins, Babina Noko have identified a need to reinforce their technical team to add to MacDonald Makhubedu and Thabo Senong as part of the preparations for next season.
“Owen da Gama is set to appear in the colours of Sekhukhune United as one of the team’s coaches. The experienced coach has agreed terms with the club to become a co-coach alongside MacDonald Makhubedu and the rest of the technical team and is set to be unveiled sometime this week. The club wants to follow a similar route like Sundowns by assembling a strong technical team comprising of knowledgeable co-coaches,” revealed a source to the Siya crew earlier on Thursday.
As confirmed by sources, Da Gama has been chosen ahead of Cavin Johnson and Kaitano Tembo who were also shortlisted for the job, and as expected the highly-rated mentor has since been announced by the ambitious club.
“Sekhukhune United Football United club is delighted to announce the appointment of Owen 'Thifhuriwi' da Gama as the co-coach to the team. Da Gama who is affectionately known as 'The Rubber Doll' will be working alongside Sekhukhune United FC Head Coach MacDonald Makhubedu for the remainder of the 21/22 DStv Premiership campaign,” Sekhukhune confirmed on the club’s official statement.
