National U23 squad head coach, Owen Da Gama has called up the Orlando Pirates trio of Menzi Masuku, Sibusiso Mahlangu and Mbongeni Gumede as part of his squad to take on Palestine in an international friendly.
Da Gama and his charges are scheduled to play Palestine, ahead of their qualifiers for the All Africa Games were they will begin their qualification campaign against Sudan in Khartoum.
Masuku has been a revelation for the Buccaneers and among the supporters who have compared him to former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star, Jabu (Pule) Mahlangu from his performances in the Multi-Choice Diski Challenge.
“I have been getting a lot of great experiences lately from the Multichoice (Diski Challenge) team, to training and playing with the (Orlando Pirates) first team. Getting the national call-up is the cherry on top, and it will help make me a better player for the future,” said the 21-year-old midfielder on his club’s official website.
Masuku’s sentiments were echoed by his teammates who were equally honoured at their call-ups.
“It’s always an honour to be selected to play for your country so I’m very happy.I think it’s important for young players to have international experience because by the time we are eligible for the senior team (Bafana Bafana), we will know a bit more about what to expect at that level,” said Gumede.
“I must thank our coaches for keeping us at a good level of fitness through the many games that we’ve played (in the Multichoice Diski Challenge and Gauteng Future Champions tournaments),” added Mahlangu.
