'Somebody Must Go To Jail For That'

Highlands Park head coach Owen da Gama did not hold back in his assessment for Orlando Pirates' late winner on Tuesday evening.

The Lions of the North succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to the Soweto giants on Tuesday evening, but there were a couple of big talking points involving the match-winner, Tshegofatso Mabaso.

Mabaso was lucky not to be sent off in the first lunge on Lindokuhle Mbatha, while replays showed the Pirates striker was well offside in the build-up to the goal.

First and foremost congratulations to Orlando Pirates, I think they were very spirited. But we created enough chances, we could have got one but it was not meant to be, give credit to them, they defended well," Da Gama said on SuperSport TV after the game.

"But we coaches get criticised a lot when officials make mistakes, from a little bit that I saw and I know, we've captured it, the guy [Tshegofatso Mabasa] was offside, three meters offside! The very same linesman on the far end, Orlando Pirates headed the ball and he blew an offside for us," the former Bucs coach went on, as he was being shown the incident on the pitchside monitor.

"Three meters off[side]! Look at it! So it is very painful to lose for this, if this is going to continue in this country, our football is not going to go far. Not to take anything away from Pirates, they played very well, they created opportunities, they are a fantastic team but that? Somebody must go to jail for that! That is wrong! You can't do such things! I'm sorry we had to lose in this fashion, we'll take it on a jaw once more, I thought the referee and the [other] linesman were superb but the linesman on the far end, I think we need to look into this."

Da Gama also revealed that Mbatha struggled after the late challenge from Mabasa early in the first half.

"A two-footed tackle and Mbatha never recovered from that, he had pain, we put in spray, they gave him an injection but he couldn't take the pain off. A two-footed tackle like that, that is murderous, I mean you can end somebody's career like that. But in saying that, it's important that we note [I have] nothing against Orlando Pirates. They played well, attacked well, defended well but we really need to look... this is not good for football in our country," he continued.

"You work so hard all week, you prepare, you analyse, just for a mistake like that to happen, I think that is shameful! Very shameful!."
