Bucs’ Clever Game Plan
Orlando Pirates tactics to diffuse league aspirations ambition working?
Orlando Pirates have repeatedly come out to declare that winning the league title would be a bonus on top of what has already been a successful season following two seasons where the Buccaneers finished outside the top five.
From the last five league games the Soweto Giants have emerged as the only realistic contenders for the league title with cross city rivals Mamelodi Sundowns looking favourite to bag the PSL trophy.
However, following last night’s round of league games Pirates manged to put four past Bidvest Wits while Sundowns only managed a draw against Maritzburg United once again putting the Soweto Giants in touching distance of the Brazilians.
With only two game remaining in the league Pirates have achieved 52 points meaning that they have qualified for the Champions League as third place Maritzburg can only finish the league with 49 points which won’t give them enough to surpass Pirates.
Pirates will have to finish off the season with 58 points and hope that Sundown who are on 56 points falter in their last two remaining league games of the season.
Sundowns last two remaining games are firstly against a desperate Ajax side who will be looking at avoiding the play-offs by gaining maximum points. The Tshwane side has historically dominated the fixtures against the team from the Cape having won three of the previous six encounters and drawing twice as well as losing once.
Secondly, and perhaps concerning for Sundowns is that in their last six league encounters against Bloemfontein Celtic, the Tshwane side has conceded eight goals to the Free State based side.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are away to Cape Town City then subsequently host Free State Stars to close off the league campaign.
The Sea Robbers have done well against both City and particularly have dominated five of the six league games they’ve played against El La Koto.
Based on current results Pirates have already achieved their objectives by qualifying for the Champions League and thus lifted the pressure on their own players putting it on Sundowns to not stumble in their quest for a league title.
