Police spokesperson, Captain Mega Ndobe, confirmed to the Siya crew that Phungwayo and his brother (Phelelani Aubrey) were arrested on Monday.

The two brothers were later released on bail of R2000 each, after they appeared in court on Tuesday, as confirmed by the police official.

“Yes, it is true. What happened is that in the early hours of the 1st day of May, around about three o’clock, there was a fight between him (Phungwayo), his brother and the other group, which resulted in him (Phungwayo) shooting at another person on the finger. The case was opened.

“On Monday he (Phungwayo) came with his lawyer. It was him and his brother. The two of them were arrested for pointing the firearm and (for) attempted murder.

“On Tuesday, yesterday, they went to court and they were granted bail of R2 000 each,” said Ndobe.

The case against the football star and his brother has been postponed to June 23 while the investigation is underway.

Asked if it was the 29-year-old Alexandra-born player who allegedly pulled the trigger during the incident, Ndobe confirmed that the victim who opened the case identified the star as the one who shot him.

“Remember I’m not the one that can directly say that. I’m confirming something that’s on the statement. According to the complainant, the one who is injured, the player is the one who pulled the trigger. That’s according to the victim, not the police.

“It’s unfortunate that we are still investigating and looking for that firearm, which we never found. I believe that it seems the firearm was unlicensed,” concluded the police captain.
