Three In Three As Bucs’ New Number One Shines

Orlando Pirates’ Siyabonga Mpontshane appears to be taking over as the new number one goalkeeper for Milutin Sredojevic’s team, the 31-year-old showing improvement with his performances.

Mpontshane has now played in three consecutive matches in Bucs’ Absa Premiership campaign, with last night’s 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic being the most recent appearance for the shot-stopper.

The Buccaneers have won all three league matches from which Mpontshane has been in goals – against Kaizer Chiefs (3-1), Golden Arrows (2-1), as well as against Celtic (2-1).

In addition, the Ngwavuma-born goalkeeper was in goals in both the Nedbank Cup matches for Bucs this season, against Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City respectively.

Francis Chansa, who was a top goalkeeper for Pirates between 2004 and 2008, has been impressed with Mpontshane’s progress so far.

“For the goalkeeping department at Pirates to function, there is a need for competition – it has always been like that. Goalkeeping department, especially when you play for big clubs, concentration and focus are needed. But on top of it all, you need more competition. For me, at the moment, Mpontshane is doing well. He is experienced,” Chansa told the Siya crew.

With Bucs managing to collect all nine points from the three matches with Mpontshane in goals, Chansa is convinced that the former Platinum Stars goalkeeper is the man to lead the team’s defence in their PSL title-chasing campaign in remaining matches of the season.

“I remember when I joined Pirates from Golden Arrows, there were about eight goalkeepers at the club. I had to improve myself, and prove to everyone at the club, and convince them that I was ready to compete. William Okpara – the former goalkeeper for Pirates – was going to retire at the time. Back to Mpontshane, he is a great goalkeeper, but he needs competition. Pirates is a big club in the league, country, and on the African continent. Competition will help him to grow,” concluded the Congolese.

Although have Wayne Sandilands and Jackson Mabokgwane as the other first team goalkeepers, Chansa believes that there is a need for another goalkeeper to be added to the squad.
