Only Sundowns & Pirates Are Mathematically Safe From Relegation
There may be only four games left for most teams in the Absa Premiership, but at this stage, only Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are officially safe in terms of their points tally.
Just 12 points separate third-placed Maritzburg United from Ajax Cape Town in 15th, meaning that even Kaizer Chiefs, who are fourth, are not even mathematically 100% safe with regards to their points on the board.
This season has been one of the tightest in recent memory at both ends of the table, something that could be largely to do with the fact that there have already been 75 draws – with 32 matches to play – as the number of shared points increases.
The number of draws in the league has been steadily on the rise in recent years. In 2014/15 there were 59, then 68 in 2014/15, followed by 69 in 2015/16 and 82 last season. Only eight more draws out of 32 games are needed for this campaign to follow that trend.
At the top of the table, following Pirates’ draw with SuperSport United, Sundowns need to pick up nine points from the remaining fifteen in order to officially secure the league title, meaning they could wrap it up against Maritzburg United later this month.
Meanwhile, at the bottom, it’s looking bad for Platinum Stars as they fell six points behind Ajax last night, although the race to avoid the relegation play-offs is going to be bitterly fought as only five points separate the Urban Warriors from Bidvest Wits in 10th.
