Orlando Pirates have completed the signing of young Zaahir Witbooi to add him to their roster for the 2017/18 season.
Whether the Buccaneers will decide to use the youngster in the first team or nurture him through the MultiChoice Diski Challenge remains unclear at this stage, but the Soweto giants have signed the player after he was spotted at the Bayhill tournament in Cape Town.
Witbooi is a 19-year-old defender from Grassy Park in the Western Cape. The talented player is a product of the Old Mutual Academy and has also been with The Magic FC in the ABC Motsepe league in the Western Cape.
He was spotted by Pirates’ scouts playing for Grassy Park United in the Bayhill tournament.
“He was previously with Old Mutual Academy and was later signed by The Magic FC at the beginning of the season. At the beginning of this year, Grassy Park United enquired about him because they wanted him for the Bayhill tournament. He joined them on loan from The Magic FC.
“He was spotted by Pirates playing in the Bayhill tournament for his father’s team (Grassy Park United). He has already been on tour to Europe with Pirates’ youth team and has just been offered a professional contract by the club,” a source told the Siya crew.
Prior to the start of last season, the Buccaneers signed Cape Town-born youngster, Yanga Baliso, and the former Ajax Cape Town development player has been making progress with Bucs’ MDC side.
