Official: Chiefs Booted Out Of Title Race
As of last night, Kaizer Chiefs can count themselves out of the Absa Premiership title race, with Mamelodi Sundowns going 13 points clear of both themselves and Maritzburg United.
Though Chiefs’ chances of pushing the Brazilians for the title were growing slimmer by the week, Steve Komphela was refusing to throw in the towel until it was mathematically impossible for them to topple the league leaders. Now, following Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Bidvest Wits on Saturday night, the fat lady that he has spoken about has officially started to sing.
Chiefs do have a chance still of securing a CAF Champions League spot, but with them sat seven points behind Orlando Pirates, that looks unlikely. The Amakhosi’s best finish, realistically, is to secure a CAF Confederation Cup spot by ending up in third place.
The Amakhosi take on Platinum Stars today as they look to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time since April of last year, and they will be keen to get a result in order to move back above Maritzburg in third.
The maximum points Chiefs can achieve this year is 51, a total that would be worse than 11 of their tallies since 1996/97 - and that is only possible if they win all four of their remaining games - but to finish third they must also rely on Maritzburg dropping points due to their vastly superior goal difference.
Chiefs face Stars at 15h00 this afternoon.
