Maritzburg United captain Phumlani Ntshangase was caught by surprise with coach Ernst Middendorp's decision ahead of new season.
The Team of Choice took a decision to sell Thabiso Kutumela and Middendorp has decided to appoint Phumlani Ntshangase as the new captain for the upcoming season.
The midfielder says the decision came as a shock, with the club having so many senior players, and says he is ready to work with them and lead by example.
"It's a big step for me, but a very exciting one to get an opportunity to lead and be the one the guys are going to be looking up to, because being a captain you must lead by example, positive attitude and perfomances," Ntshangase said, via the club's media team.
"I didn't expect it, as we have so many experienced players in the team. I was shocked to be chosen but as I said I'm up for it. I'm willing to work with every player. I've done this before in development and so it is not new and I'm honoured to be in this position. "
Ntshangase aims to help young players be able to deal with life on and off the field as well as the pressure of playing in the professional league.
"My duty is to make sure our young players are guided on how to behave on and off the field, always motivated to perform because the reality is, it may be a struggle when you are new in the professional ranks, so I must make their job easy."
