Erwin Nguema's first half goal was enough to earn Gabon a 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their Group D encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
With Just 40 seconds gone, Erwin Nguema's header drew a fine save from Robert Kidiaba, following Samson Mbingui's corner.
Seconds later, Nguema gave Gabon the lead with just two minutes gone, the defender managed to lose his marker before thumping his header past Kidiaba.
In the 13th minute Eric Nkulukhuta tested Stephane Moto with a curling free kick, but Gabon's number one did well to parry the effort away.
Frank Engoga tried his luck from range in the 26th minute, after the ball deflected into the midfielder's path, before Volleying high and wide.
In the 42nd minute Cyrille Avebe's long range effort went narrowly wide after being teed up by Mbingui.
Lionel Yackouya had a chance to double Gabon's lead in the 44th minute but his volley from close range went well over the bar.
A minute later and Mbingui nearly had Gabon's second, as the midfielder's deflected effort from range nearly caught out Robert Kidiaba.
Mbingui squandered a great opportunity to double Gabon's lead in the 49th minute, as the midfielder was left one on one with Kidiaba, who did well to save Mbingui's effort.
Eddy Ngoyi Emomo tried his luck from distance in the 51st minute but the striker's effort lack the power and direction to trouble Moto.
In the 65th minute Sokambi Taty managed get beyond the Congo defence, but the striker failed to pick out any of his teammates, despite having a lot of time on the ball.
Jean Kasusula's powerful volley in the 77th minute drew a fine save from Moto.
Emomo squandered a glorious chance to grab an equaliser for Congo in the 88th minute, as the striker blasted over from six yards out, after some good build up play.
Congo were restricted to long range efforts late on, as Chikito Lema Mbidi shot just wide in the 90th minute.
The win moves Gabon to the top of Group D with four points, while Congo DR drop down to second.
