Big-Money Offers Make You Go Off The Rails
In this week's edition of Soccer Laduma, issue number 908, Vasco da Gama’s captain, Nathan Gertse, talks to Soccer Laduma’s Peter Raath about his side’s lack of goals.
He also discusses his teammates, pro football and Ajax Cape Town - with the NFD Focus brought to you by BUCO.
With Vasco da Gama having the second worst goalscoring record in the NFD, Gertse feels that they are let down by the final touch in terms of converting chances. He said, " we play nice football. We get behind the oppositions’ lines, but we’re not finishing... that’s the main point."
Despite all the frustrations, the skipper has alluded to the fact that he has a role model alongside him who always encourages him.
"It’s nice to have someone motivating, helping and pushing me in the right direction. Most of the people think that because my dad’s here I get selected, but that’s not the case. During my first year, I didn’t play at all. I only got my chance the following season when Carlos Das Neves took over.
"Even my captaincy is not as a result of favouritism. At home there are always arguments. My dad gives me a hard time. When I ask his thoughts on my performance, he’ll say, “You didn’t have a good game. Next time lift yourself up.”
He concluded by comparing his current club with next-door neighbours, Ajax Cape Town
" At Vasco you can make jokes, but when it’s time to work, it’s time to work. Across the road at Ajax, everybody’s in their shells. The coaches are strict, although they do have a bit of laughter in them, " said Gertse.
