Former Arrows CEO Joins New Club

Former Golden Arrows CEO, Gordon Masondo, has already found a new home with a new club, after recently parting ways with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.

As recently reported by the Siya crew, Masondo resigned from the position he held at Arrows, as the club’s CEO. Known for his football administration experience from previously working with various clubs in the PSL and NFD in his career, Masondo has been quickly snapped up by his former bosses, Mario and George Morfou, who are at the helm at Alexandra Black Aces these days.

In his football administration role, Masondo boasts winning promotion with teams from lower divisions in the SAB to Vodacom (now ABC Motsepe) League and NFD respectively.

Having previously worked with the Morfou brothers, and achieved success with the club during their time with Mpumalanga Black Aces before the club was sold to John Comitis in 2016, the two club owners have decided to rope in Masondo again for their ABC Motsepe League outfit, when they heard of his availability.

Despite attracting interest from PSL clubs that have been keen on adding him to their respective rosters, Masondo has accepted the offer to re-join Aces, so as to work with the Morfou brothers again.

Masondo has been tasked with helping the struggling third-tier outfit to finish the season still campaigning in the league, with the club’s long-term plan for him being to help them win promotion to the NFD next season.

“I can confirm that I am back with Aces. I am not scared of challenges, and that’s why I have accepted this offer to re-join the team, while in a lower division as it is. I am a challenge-driven person. In my career, I have always accepted positions at teams where I faced challenges. I have done that with a lot of teams,” said Masondo.

“Even with this team, when I was with them the last time, they were second from bottom of the log with four games remaining for the season. The team looked like it was destined for relegation. I joined the club, and we revived the team, and we survived relegation. In the season that followed, we won promotion,” he said.

Some of the experienced administrator’s duties would be to help recruit personnel to be added to Aces’ technical team for next season, as well as players in line with the team’s promotion plans.

“But let’s not forget that Aces currently have a coach in Lombi Mabusela, who is a very good coach by the way. He is an asset to the club. We are talking here about the guy who has been loyal to the club, even when everybody else left, including (me). Keeping such a guy within the setup is something good for the club,” he added.

Wits, SA City Pillars, City Sharks, Katlehong City, Nathi Lions, Dynamos and Diarora FC are some of the clubs Masondo has worked for over the years.

“In rebuilding Aces, and as part of my job, I will have to make sure that I get right people to be members of this club, from the technical staff down to the players. I can confirm that I have been talking to a number of people, who are experienced in the game, with a view to recruiting them to the club.

"My fellow brother and well-travelled coach Jacob Sakala is one of the people I have been in touch with. I would like him to rejoin the club and be part of rebuilding this team. I’m looking forward to putting together a sound technical team, and to do a proper recruitment of players who will be playing for our team in the coming season. Since my re-appointment, I have been going around the country and looking for talent to be added to the club. Building a team need different people to work together.

"If respectable guys in football like Owen da Gama and Allan Freese can go back to where they feel comfortable (Highlands Park) and achieve success, why can't I do the same? What is stopping me from doing the same? I believe that as a football administrator my job has nothing to do with the levels, but has to do with football administration, be it in the lower or higher division of South African football. My job will always be administering football.

Contacted for comment, Aces co-chairman Mario Morfou confirmed to the Siya crew the latest developments taking place at the club.

“Yeah, he (Masondo) has re-joined the club – that’s correct. It’s a nice comeback, and it’s going to be very exciting. He’s back home – the man – you know what I mean. For now, we are going to try and push with what we can do. We are going to try our best,” said Morfou.
