Nedbank Cup Quarterfinal
Teams: Bloemfontein Celtic V Bidvest Wits
Date: 13 April 2014
Venue: Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium
Bloemfontein Celtic will be looking to upset the odds when they host Bidvest Wits in a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal match at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Celtic will be facing top flight opposition for the first time in this year’s Nedbank Cup. The Bloemfontein side crushed the University of Stellenbosch 8-0 in the Last 32 and then edged out Witbank Spurs 2-1 in the previous round.
Wits, on the other hand, hey beat lower league AmaBEE 2-0 in the Last 32 and then showed their class with a 4-1 win over fellow Premiership side AmaZulu.
The teams have met in seven cup matches down the years and it is Wits who certainly have the head-to-head edge, with six wins under their belt and just one defeat suffered.
Celtic’s one and only cup win over Wits arrived in the 1999/2000 season when they beat the Joburg side 2-0 away in the first leg of a first round Rothmans Cup clash. Wits won the return game 2-1, but Phunya Sele Sele still advanced 3-2 on aggregate.
Overall, Wits have tended to get the better of Celtic: in 55 league and cup meetings since 1985, the University-based side has claimed 25 victories compared to 16 for the Free State club.
This is how they line up.
Celtic: Tignyemb, Ndengane, Letlabika, Nkausu, Daniels, Buchanana, Gabonamong, Mahoa, Mogapi, Mogorosi, Nyatama.
Wits: Josephs, Gumede, Vilakazi, Faty, Ngcobo, Nhlapo, Bhasera, Dankwae, Mngonyama, Shongwe, Ntshangase.
