Nedbank Cup Quarterfinal
Full Time: Bloemfontein Celtic 1-2 Bidvest Wits
Date: 13 April 2014
Venue: Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium
Bidvest Wits came from a goal behind to beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 in a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal match at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Wits started positively and came close to breaking the deadlock three minutes in when Sthembiso Ngcobo headed a right wing cross narrowly wide.
In the 17th minute Ngcobo tried his luck from long range, but he was superbly denied by Patrick Tignyemb, the keeper producing an acrobatic save to deny him.
Then in the 22nd minute, very much against the run of play, Celtic took the lead after an expert finish from Musa Nyatama, 1-0.
Wits, though, hit back very quickly when Sibusiso Vilakazi restored parity two minutes later, 1-1.
The Clever Boys took the game by the scruff of the neck after that and nearly took the lead on the half hour mark when Papy Faty fired inches wide of the target.
Celtic suffered a massive set-back in the 38th minute when Alfred Ndengane was shown a red card for a professional foul on Vilakazi.
From the resulting free-kick Jabulani Shongwe gave Wits the lead with a superb strike, 2-1.
The second 45 produced very little in terms of goal mouth action as Wits tightened up in defence and tried to hold onto their lead.
This allowed Celtic to see more of the ball, but the y struggled to create chances in front of goal.
In the 56th minute Joel Mogorosi shot from the edge of the box, but he saw his effort well-saved by Moeneeb Josephs.
Celtic tried to find their way back into the match, but could not breach the Wits defence as they moved into the semifinals of the cup competition.
