Maritzburg Into Last Four

Nedbank Cup Quarter-Finals

Result: African Warriors 1-3 Maritzburg United

Maritzburg United booked their place in the last four of the Nedbank Cup after their 3-1 extra-time win over African Warriors at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Saturday.

The National First Division side started off the stronger of the two and had shots at goal from Maliele Pule, Muziwandile Khwela and former AmaZulu striker Josef Lekata in the opening quarter hour, unfortunately for the home side no shot came close to hitting the target.

Khwela did however force a save out of Virgil Vries on the half-hour mark but the scores remained level as the home side did most of the attacking in the opening 45 minutes.

The deadlock was finally broken with five minutes played in the second-half as Mario Booysen got his head on the end of a Bongolethu Jayiya cross to make it 1-0 to Maritzburg United.

The home side then grabbed an equaliser in the 72nd as Thapelo Selepe combined well with Kamohelo Mabuya before making it 1-1 with a fine finish.

Neither side was able to find a winner during the 90 minutes so extra-time was needed to decide this cup tie.

Substitute Terrence Mandaza then put the visitors ahead with his left-footed strike in the 105th minute of play to make it 2-1 to United, and then added his second two minutes later to all but kill off the cup tie and book Maritzburg their spot in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.
