Highlands On The Brink Of Promotion, Cosmos Up To Third

National First Division Wrap

By Soccer Laduma - Apr 01, 2018 05:27 PM
National First Division (NFD) table-toppers Highlands Park are on the brink of making a triumphant return to the money-spinning PSL after whipping Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC 4-0, Jomo Cosmos grabbed 3rd spot with a 4-2 victory over Richards Bay, while Witbank Spurs defeated luckless Mthatha Bucks 1-0.

In addition, Black Leopards overpowered Stellenbosch 3-1 whereas Mbombela United and Cape Town All Stars played to a 1-1 draw.

The Lions of the North, thanks to goals from Sphiwe Mahlangu, Mothobi Mvala, Sabelo Nyembe and Peter Shalulile, require just a single point to be crowned NFD champions.

During a six-goal thriller at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in KZN, lowly Richards Bay fought hard but eventually succumbed to a much stronger Ezenkosi outfit.

Despite at one point being a man down when left back, Thabo Ralebakeng, was red-carded, the home side drew level at 2-2 before Cosmos finished the job with both Denzil Haoseb and Tebogo Tlolane hitting braces.

Thabiso Nkoana and Stanley Muishond were on target for Jean Loscuito’s team.

Richards Bay remains on 27 points, 3 from safety, while it’s a similar situation near the foot of the log for Uthongathi FC, Super Eagles and Royal Eagles.

Uthongathi FC and Super Eagles drew 1-1 with Celimpilo Ngema opening the scoring for Uthongathi prior to Bongani Mbuli equalizing.

The game between Royal Eagles and University of Pretoria ended goalless.

Siyavutha continued their push for a play-off spot however, Bucks have an enormous task if they want to remain in the NFD.

In Limpopo, Mwape Musonda’s brace – his 14th successful strike – helped Lidoda Duvha secure 2nd position – 15 points behind the Lions of the North.

Igugu Lekapa almost lost their 2018 unbeaten record in Mpumalanga but a late goal from Lucky Setelele ensured a valuable away point.

Earlier, Mbombela’s Bheki Maliba had made the score 1-0.

On Tuesday, Nedbank Cup giant-killers, Ubuntu Cape Town, host Real Kings at the Athlone Stadium.

@Glamour boys akaKhosination...we dont know why he sold those 3 superstars. Highlands Park would have never had it so easy.We were playing the best attacking football ever. We attacked relentlessly. I have never seen Jomo Cosmos attacking from angles like that. It reminded me of the venomous attacking Jomo Cosmos of Thomas Madigage, Helmam Mkhelele, Tony Caetano, Phil Masinga, Augustine Makalakalane,,Eric September, etc. Supporters were so happy. But it seems they have recovered from that loss of 3 players.

@MaTshepiso Highlands Park is not lucky, they simply know how to do business while on the other side your boss is not business minded. Why he sold 3 players to Chippa during midseason transfer window?

@Mketule 1...check their margin of wins. More than 50% is 1-0. They played terrible and ugly football. They defended with 7 players.Only now they have big wins. Honestly, they are the luckiest NFD champion ever. It was pure luck that they got many of those 1-0 victories.

@Sobz Ndabs...how can you fire Ian Palmer? Sometimes owners are emotional and take bizarre decisions. Now the same Palmer is saving Super Eagles but this Super Eagles must still donate 3 points to us. We are in menancing mood.

@MaTshepiso I differ with you when you say Highlands Park was lucky. The team hammered lot of teams including Cosmos with bigger scores and dominated each game and the gap say it all. There were not smash and grap results as they bullied everyone. They never had any competition.

It looks like my home team is going down & there's other option to save them, last season they fired Eddie Dyaloyi and replaced him with experienced Ian Palmer, the preseason vision was clear when they recruite more players including Mpho Erasmus but I don't know what happened to Palmer, their biggest mistake was to replace him with inexperienced Lechesa while there were coaches like Malesela, Sikhakhane, Heric & others that were available at that time

@MaTshepiso : they better do that Cosmos is very disappointing considering that it is a team : of the legend, coached : by the legend. Hats off to you and other Cosmos supporters who endure supporting this vision less under achieving team. I pray that Cosmos qualify for promotional p/offs and win promotion just for you die hard supporters.

@lil-holiday...what favour are you talking about? We demolished and dismantled Moroka Swallows and toppled Black Leopards to go to the PSL. Thediela tried to bribe Swallows players by saying he will give them jobs if they beat Jomo Cosmos. We are again going to destroy this Leopards in playoffs.

Jomo Cosmos and Black Leopards are cowards how long will they stay at Mvela or what what! They want to bully small teams like Mthatha Bucks , Uthongathi etc for all their lives. These teams must be men and fight for promotion so as to meet the big guns like Bloem Celtic, FSS, Maritzburg just to name the smallest in the big league.

Highlands Park must regard themselves as lucky. Only luck assisted them to win this tough NFD league.

Black Leopards and Jomo Cosmos are now showing their class, stamina and experience. Their are unstoppable and are marching to play-off spot. Jomo Cosmos will once again be too strong for Black Leopards and Ajax or Polokwane City to return to the promised land of milk and honey. I don't see any team drawing with or beating Jomo Cosmos in their last 5 games. It will be 5 out of 5. (15 points). TTM and Sello Chokoe must expect another hammering at Vosloorus Stadium. Our Number 21 and number 11 will are in scintilliating form and I see another 4-0 drubbing.
