Highlands On The Brink Of Promotion, Cosmos Up To Third

National First Division (NFD) table-toppers Highlands Park are on the brink of making a triumphant return to the money-spinning PSL after whipping Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC 4-0, Jomo Cosmos grabbed 3rd spot with a 4-2 victory over Richards Bay, while Witbank Spurs defeated luckless Mthatha Bucks 1-0.

In addition, Black Leopards overpowered Stellenbosch 3-1 whereas Mbombela United and Cape Town All Stars played to a 1-1 draw.

The Lions of the North, thanks to goals from Sphiwe Mahlangu, Mothobi Mvala, Sabelo Nyembe and Peter Shalulile, require just a single point to be crowned NFD champions.

During a six-goal thriller at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in KZN, lowly Richards Bay fought hard but eventually succumbed to a much stronger Ezenkosi outfit.

Despite at one point being a man down when left back, Thabo Ralebakeng, was red-carded, the home side drew level at 2-2 before Cosmos finished the job with both Denzil Haoseb and Tebogo Tlolane hitting braces.

Thabiso Nkoana and Stanley Muishond were on target for Jean Loscuito’s team.

Richards Bay remains on 27 points, 3 from safety, while it’s a similar situation near the foot of the log for Uthongathi FC, Super Eagles and Royal Eagles.

Uthongathi FC and Super Eagles drew 1-1 with Celimpilo Ngema opening the scoring for Uthongathi prior to Bongani Mbuli equalizing.

The game between Royal Eagles and University of Pretoria ended goalless.

Siyavutha continued their push for a play-off spot however, Bucks have an enormous task if they want to remain in the NFD.

In Limpopo, Mwape Musonda’s brace – his 14th successful strike – helped Lidoda Duvha secure 2nd position – 15 points behind the Lions of the North.

Igugu Lekapa almost lost their 2018 unbeaten record in Mpumalanga but a late goal from Lucky Setelele ensured a valuable away point.

Earlier, Mbombela’s Bheki Maliba had made the score 1-0.

On Tuesday, Nedbank Cup giant-killers, Ubuntu Cape Town, host Real Kings at the Athlone Stadium.
