Following his side’s 2-1 Absa Premiership win away to Maritzburg United on Tuesday night, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane revealed his grand plan in attempting to defend the title.
Mosimane made just two changes from the team he’d put out in the 3-0 CAF Champions League group stage victory at home against Lobi Stars of Nigeria on Saturday night but told the media that he would be forced to rotate going forward.
The Brazilians went top of the table after beating Maritzburg and also booked their place in the quarter-finals of the continental competition with a game to spare – making their trip to Wydad Casablanca this weekend merely about finishing top of their group to avoid the other big guns in the tournament.
“We need to listen to the players and we need honesty more than anything, but it is a bit difficult because players want to play all the time,” Mosimane said in relation to his rotation policy.
“It’s good because it means the players are not chickening out. But you have to manage the legs. You’ve seen that we have six centre backs and we have used five. It’s just that Bangaly (Soumahoro) is injured. All of them have to play, even our full backs. We will use them all. (Tiyani) Mabunda is there with (Hlompho) Kekana, then Andile (Jali) comes on. Sometimes we use Rivaldo (Coetzee) in central midfield. We need all the resources. We use Phakamani (Mahlambi), Lebo (Maboe), Themba Zwane and (Emiliano) Tade. Everybody, but the mentality and the play must remain the same. The will to win, it’s not easy.”
