Neither Morocco or Cape Verde were able to draw level with Bafana Bafana in Group A as they played out a 1-1 draw in their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations clash on Wednesday night.
Luis Platini had fired the islanders into the lead in the 36th minute but Youssef El-Arabi struck with 12 minutes to go as the points were shared.
Morocco were favourites on the night but nerves seemed to get the better of both sides from the start as they struggled to keep the ball.
Cape Verde had the better opening 20 minutes though with Ryan Mendes testing goalkeeper Nadir Lamyghri with a free-kick early on.
The Atlas Lions then survived due to a good double save from their goalkeeper as Nivaldo and Platini were denied.
The pressure from the Blue Sharks paid off in the 36th minute when Platini linked up with Mendes to rip through the defence and the latter slotted home.
Youssef El-Arabi was introduced to give the Atlas Lions some more support upfront and they slowly came back in the second period with Abdelaziz Barrada firing a free-kick over in the 67th minute.
Morocco's best chances were coming on the counter and that tactic worked with 12 minutes to go when Barrada pushed up and sent a superb cross in for El-Arabi to fire home.
Both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances in the final few minutes as they each left with a point.
