Minchella Answers His Readers

In our weekly feature where you, the reader, ask the selected journalist questions, our in-house Kaizer Chiefs, Wits and Maritzburg United specialist, David Minchella gets back to you.

Questions were submitted to David by our readers, trying to get an insight into life as a journo and football as a whole.

Five random questions were selected for our specialist to answer.

Hello all, let's talk some football. Shoot!

Q: David, do you get offended when some bloggers insult you?

Submitted by: Memphis_Returns

A: I feel some of the insults are unnecessary at times. Then again football fans are entitled to their views. They're also entitled to express their disapproval if they don't agree with a story that's been published. You have to have a thick skin in this journalism game, otherwise the insults might get to you!

Q: David, why are you and Joe Crann always reporting about Kaizer chiefs?

Submitted by: SeezDGAF

A: The work assignments from our Soccer-Laduma editorial team are as follows. Joe and I cover Kaizer Chiefs together. In addition he covers SuperSport United and Platinum Stars, while I cover Wits and Maritzburg United.

Lunga Adam and Masebe Qina cover Mamelodi Sundowns together, while Lunga covers Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows and Masebe takes AmaZulu and Free State Stars.

Khaya Ndubane and Julian Bailey cover Orlando Pirates together. Khaya then covers Moroka Swallows and Polokwane City and Julian covers Ajax Cape Town and Tuks.

We are expected to produce four stories a day - two from the so-called bigger clubs and one each from the other two teams. There really is no bias towards Chiefs, I can promise you, because all the so-called bigger teams receive equal attention, as you can see.

Q: Why don't you ask us the same questions about Maritzburg United and Wits that you usually ask about Kaizer Chiefs? Example - is Yakubu finding his feet? Will Wits win any silverware?

Submitted by: fortune_COWloba

A:  I try to do so as much as possible. Please remember that we have a bigger quota of Chiefs stories to cover every week and it may appear as if  we're doing more Chiefs-related content when in fact we're not. By the way mate, please read the article below, which I did earlier this season.

Q: Why do you think it has gone wrong at Chiefs and do you think Maritzburg United will make it to the top 8?

Submitted by: John wa Lekhosi

A: Personally, I think it's way too early to say it's going wrong at Chiefs. They're up there amongst the leaders on the PSL table and their only major disappointment was the loss to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8. Even that two-legged semi-final was a very tight affair which could have gone either way. In time with the quality the club have got, I'd expect the likes of Knowledge Musona to really find his place in Stuart Baxter's way of playing.

With regards to Maritzburg, the club are being hit hard by an injury crisis and I feel they virtually need a full squad of healthy players to have a chance of finishing in the top 8.

Q: Do you pay your sources? And, when you interview players for the newspaper and web do you pay them?

Submitted by: Keelie K4L

A: No we don't, Keelie. The players, coaches and officials involved in the game are 'entertainers'. It's their responsibility to keep the public informed about what is going on. It's our duty as journalists to share the news they kindly provide us with. We are very grateful for the mainly good relationships we have with most PSL clubs in this country.

Sometimes there are exceptions but we do our best to get you the football news you want and need. We are junkyard dogs when it comes to getting a good story because we believe our readers deserve that.

All the best guys and thanks for all your questions.

Give it to me, I'm in space!
