Former Kaizer Chiefs striker, Mike Mangena believes that Amakhosi need to bring in a sports psychologist to restore a winning mentality to the team.
In Steve Komphela’s debut season at the club in 2015/16, Chiefs failed to win any silverware despite reaching two finals, and 2016/17 has seen a continuation of their struggles on the pitch - following consecutive losses to Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City in the Absa Premiership and MTN8 respectively. Mangena believes that the players at the club are struggling to cope with the level of expectation that comes with wearing the black and gold jersey.
“You can imagine the amount of pressure that there is at Chiefs,” he told Soccer Laduma. “I understand the pressure on some of the players and it takes time to adjust to that pressure.”
“I feel that they’ve got the players and all they need to do now, perhaps, is bring in a sports psychologist full time. They can help the players restore their belief, because there’s no confidence and they are good players. They just need the belief to say that 'we can do it',” he concluded.
