South Africa’s Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, has called upon the Bafana Bafana players to listen to instructions, be disciplined and have a game plan.
Speaking at a Cape Town hotel before a hushed audience, which included the entire 23-man Bafana Afcon squad and the technical team, Mbalula said, “The Afcon teams are coming to prove their worth, some play in the best leagues in the world, some with you so the question is whether or not you are made up in terms of team spirit, listen to instructions and at the same time have a game plan.”
“The difficulty is when you take to the field. You must be ready for that particular moment. Many spectators want glory, yes they are right. Football is the number one sport in SA, the sport of the poor. If there’s anything that brought us together, it’s football. This is what made us celebrate and brought us hope when there was hopelessness.
The minister went on to emphasise the importance of planning, adding that the nation is behind the team.
He concluded, “Don’t undermine your opponents, study them correctly. I’ve no doubt that each one of you deserve to be here. Your patriotism for South Africa is not under question. We support and wish you glory.”
