Mashego: It’s Good To Be Back

This season’s top scorer in the Absa Premiership, Katlego Mashego, says that it’s good to be back with the national team following his re-call earlier this month.
The 31-year-old has been in a rich vein of form for the Dube Birds this season scoring 13 goals in the league, during his first campaign at Dobsonville, and the national team’s head coach, Gordon Igesund, felt that he deserved to be called up.
Speaking after Friday’s training session in Germiston, Mashego said, “It’s always good to be back, it’s what you play for as a professional South African, you always want to be in the national team.
“The CAR (Central African Republic) game should be one that we can win, the way we played in the played in the first game against them, I think we stand a good chance of coming home with three points. The Ethiopia game will be a bit difficult but I think it’s a mental thing, I think we can go there and get something out of that game.”
This Bafana squad sees the two top scorers in South Africa, Mashego and Bernard Parker, in the same group and possibly even on the same team if both are given the nod. Mashego says that he’s not surprised by the form of himself and his national team colleague.
He said ,“You want to be in the national team, I’m high on confidence and I’m looking forward to the games. Between myself and Parker we’ve scored 25 goals and we’re both number 10s, it’s the norm in South African football that the number 10s score more than the big men up front.”
It remains to be seen whether Mashego will start any of June’s fixtures against Lesotho, CAR and Ethiopia, however he will certainly feature at some point.
